Twenty years ago, people simply would not have had the choice of which venue they relied on in order to try to meet other like-minded people. They would have been forced to mosey on down to their local singles' bar and this experience was not always that pleasant.

Of course, the biggest drawback of internet dating is the fact that you do not get the opportunity to meet the date face-to-face to start off with. You are forced to take their profile and messages as gospel and just trust that they are being completely honest with you.
On the other hand though, you do have a good amount of anonymity: there are no pressures on you when you can hide behind the safety of your own computer. Ostensibly, this is the most important feature and is the reason why there has been such a massive rise in the number of people using online dating services.
There is one other point that may need to be brought to the fore here now, though, and that is if internet dating sites have played a part in the fact that people are getting married far later today? People seem to be more inclined to get on with their careers and do not wish to settle down until later on in life. Perhaps it is the fact that internet dating sites are on hand to turn to if and when you are ready to make that plunge?
