Buying Chocolate Gifts

Behind the simple red rose, few gifts are more romantic than a chocolate one. Heart shaped, milk-cocoa, flowers of dark Swiss, nougat-filled or candy-coated perhaps, caramel in the middle, a surprise burst or raspberry, all there to tease and tantalise thousands of sensory receptors set alight, all for a romantic, sensual gesture, from one to another. Chocolate gifts work better than Cupid's arrows.

But what type do you choose? What is this chocolate gift going to communicate to your paramour? What does it say about you? There are experts when it comes to matters like these. They are the horticulturalists and technicians of chocolate gifts. Perhaps it is silly to ask a complete stranger, albeit one with a sweet tooth and a lore of cocoa-covered candy, for advice on what type of Chocolate Gifts to give to your significant other. But it might help to have a look at some of their general rules/guidelines some of them might propose.

Rule number one: Go Belgian (budget allowing). Where possible, invest in something foreign, like Swiss or, preferably, Belgian chocolate. Belgium is not known for much else for a reason. When you’re the best at something, you generally don’t have to worry about proving yourself in any other regard. Fortunately for the rest of the world, Belgians are really great at making chocolate gifts.

Rule Number two: go low-calories (sneakily). This is self-explanatory. You don’t want your chocolate gift to be the cause of heartache -pun intended- in the future, now do you?

Rule Number three: go heart-shaped, mostly. The heart-shaped chocolate gift is a ubiquitous image of Valentine’s Day. So, it works. However, consider doing something slightly different, unique. Perhaps one shaped in their name, or a portrait of yourself -which carries some symbolism as your gift is digested, whether that’s a good or bad thing is up to you.

Rule Number four: less is more. When it comes to chocolate gifts, you don’t want to use it like roses. Mostly because the latter is not (typically) eaten. Buying your spouse a ton of expensive chocolates is not really as romantic as it is wasteful. One or two chocolate gifts, embedded in a mass of roses, as a centerpiece on their bed, is more like it!
